Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease the muffin tins with butter.
In a separate container, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until smooth. Whisk in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and buttermilk. Stir in flour mixture, stirring until combined. Add banana and crushed apple puree. Fill each muffin cup half full.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool.
