Brown rice is a staple food in many parts of the world, known for its nutritious value. It has a nutty and chewy texture, making it a great match for a variety of flavors and ingredients. Although it takes a bit longer to cook than white rice, the outcome is definitely worth the extra wait.

Method

  • To make the rice fluffy, rinse it under cold water for about 30 seconds using a fine mesh strainer. This step helps to get rid of any excess starch, resulting in a perfectly cooked dish.

  • To cook the rice, start by boiling water and salt in a medium saucepan over high heat. Once the water comes to a boil, add the rinsed rice, give it a quick stir, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan with a lid and let the rice simmer until it's tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, which should take approximately 45 minutes.

  • After the rice has cooked, take it off the heat and let it rest for 10 minutes, covered. This will give it time to steam and soak up any leftover moisture. Season the rice with a pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon of cumin powder, and black pepper to taste. Then, use a fork to fluff it up and serve it warm, ready to be enjoyed! Top the dish with some parsley leaves.

Tips

  • Another option for cooking brown rice is using a rice cooker, simply following the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Keep in mind that the cooking time and the ratio of water to rice may vary slightly based on the type of rice cooker you own.

  • It's best to leave the lid on the saucepan during the cooking process to prevent the release of steam, which can affect the cooking of the rice. Avoid lifting the lid.

Bon Appetit!
